Cory Ross, the No. 3 seed, of Denver, claimed the men’s open title at the $10,000 United States Professional Tennis Association Hard Court Championships Sunday at the Hollytree Country Club in Tyler, Texas. Ross upset the No. 1 seed, Trace Fielding of San Antonio, 7-6, 6-2, for the championship. Marina McCollom of Ames, Iowa, earned the women’s open championship title by going undefeated in round robin play. McCollom defeated Brittany Serret of Alexandria, La., by a walkover due to injury. With this win, McCollom ends 2008 by winning the women’s open singles title in four of the five USPTA surface tournaments, including the International Championships.
The tournament, which was held from Oct. 24-26, was sponsored by Hembree Chiropractic and Tyler Beverages and included events in the following categories: men’s and women’s open singles, men’s open doubles, men’s 45 singles and mixed open doubles.
