Obregon, Schwartz Wins Open Singles at the 2017 USPTA Grass Court Championships

Obregon also took home the men’s open doubles title

NEWPORT, R.I. --- Rudy Obregon (San Antonio, Texas) & Anne Schwartz (North Hatfield, Mass) won the Men’s and Women’s Open Singles titles at the 2017 USPTA Grass Court Championships that took place June 20-23 at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, R.I. 

The four-day event provided USPTA professional players to showcase their skills beyond teaching the game of tennis to compete for $5,000 in grand prizes.

Obregon dominated Brandon Cutter (Harwich, Mass) in two sets 6-1, 6-0 to win the Men’s Open Singles and his first victory in the 2017 USPTA Surface Championship Series. Obregon then teamed up with David Wanja to win the Men’s Open Doubles over Cutter and Nick Majewski (Brewster, Mass) 3-6, 7-6, 1-0, (10-8).

Schwartz defeated Michelle Brown (Acton, Mass) with a 6-0, 6-0 victory to capture her first win in the Surface Championship Series.

The next and final Surface Championship tournament will be the USPTA Hard Court Championships that will take place Nov. 3-5 at the River Place Country Club in Austin, Texas.

Men’s Open Singles 
Rudy Obregon (San Antonio, Texas) def. Brandon Cutter (Harwich, Mass.) 6-1, 6-0

Men’s 35+ Singles 
Brandon Cutter def. Marcus Rutsche (Johns Creek, Ga.) 6-7, 6-4, 11-9

Men’s 45 Singles 
Steve Brady (Tampa, Fla.) def. Raj Jackson (Las Vegas) 6-1, 6-0

Men’s 55+ Singles 
Tom Breece (Phoenix, Ariz.) def. Brady 6-4, 6-4 

Women’s Open Singles 
Anne Schwartz (North Hatfield, Mass.) def. Michelle Brown (Acton, Mass.) 6-0, 6-0

Men’s Open Doubles 
Obregon/David Wanja (Huffman, Texas) def. Cutter/ Nick Majewski (Brewster, Mass.) 3-6, 7-6, 1-0, (10-8)
